When you’re able to remain forthright

Even though it impairs your desires

When you can stare at your face in the mirror

And confidently admit you did your best

When your word is truly your bond

Uncompromised merely to win the moment

And others behind your back can confidently swear

In reliance on the assurances, you made

When you can stand tall and admit

The things you once held immutable are wrong

And still walk aware unbowed

But refreshed and refocused by your new admission

When you can identify the things to change

And be wily about how and when to effect the changes

And still be able to swim against the tide

When your conscience leads you there

When you can concede a truth to your ardent critic

Shortly after a most withering review

and still take pride in the remaining merits of your cause

without being defensive, despondent, or disparaging

when you can truly free yourself

from the trap and trappings of reputation or office

when you can really learn to listen to other’s point of view

and yet freely admit a virtue in an adversary you had previously demonized

when you finally learn to be wary

of the discreet demons in your sanctuary

then and only then, may you lay claim to the blessings of wisdom

that have transcended through the ages
